Not impressed.
Hello, I am someone struggling with borderline personality disorder and I personally found your podcast about my condition offensive. Not only was the man you brought in arrogant and assumptive, but he painted people like me as though they were monsters. I have worked very hard to stay alive in spite of my condition. I have worked through addiction, hospitalization, family abandonment, numerous traumatic experiences. Not all borderline people are untreatable, incomprehensible monsters. What was said in that episode could have triggered all kinds of issues in BPD people like self harm, further self-hatred, and the like. I understand that this condition is difficult to treat, and it’s hard for everyone including those who are suffering with that person, and those treating them as well, but we are not impossible. I am someone who has had to work very hard, and I hold a masters degree and a PhD practically. I am extremely concerned that so-called experts would be promoting these types of attitudes towards what we suffer with. We need compassion, not demonization or condescension. And if you’re someone who demonizes, you don’t belong in the field treating these people. For a so-called award-winning program I am quite mortified. To use your expertise to promote these attitudes is not helping, it is harmful. This type of program makes it harder for people like me to be treated like human beings. You belong in the dark ages. I will not be listening in the future.

I appreciate Gabe’s commitment to making sure people understand that they aren't broken and actively fighting incorrect notions of mental health.Read full review »
