    Historian Mason Cainrich is confronted by a mysterious stranger, Ciro Aurrente, who shares with him the most sinister conspiracy ever carried out. In this episode Mason meets Ciro who begins his story of the destruction of Corraban, what had been the greatest city in the world, and as with many good stories it starts with murder.

    As Aurrente continues to investigate the murder of his colleague Antonius Maray, a new person enters the story - Captain Chloe Vasker, a famous, or infamous, member of the Legion, the international volunteer army created to fight the undead. A brief history of the Legion is provided and we learn more about the Corraban border guards - perhaps the most thoroughly corrupt organisation that ever existed.

    After surviving his encounter with the Brotherhood thanks to the help of Captain Vasker and local revolutionaries Aurrente returns to his comfortable apartment to prepare for the next party where much of his actual espionage work is done. Also features correspondence between the local revolutionaries and their supporters in the distant country of Hanniria, who have shunned by the international community for their radical politics, and an article from the Corraban Star on the arrival of King-General Selles Castor, one of the Three Emperors who are vying for control of the city.

This episode also features an article on the arrival of Emperor Varance II to the city, the rich, powerful and not terribly competent ruler of Dravia and a report from Dr Warade, the Minister for Public Health when the zombie outbreak began.

    The episode starts with a diary entry from Captain Chloe Vasker, explaining some of the history of her country, Hanniria, and what their violent revolution has meant to her and what her people are now doing in Corraban. Also Aurrente wakes after his capture in the tunnels to find he is once again in the clutches of the Brotherhood - about to become a victim of their world-renowned torture skills. Finally there is a extract from the work of Sapra Chana on the history of torture and violence in the Brotherhood.
