“I’ve listened to the relevant podcast for years. Although I really enjoy the show, the recent update to Relevant Plus has deterred me from continuing to listen. When the new medium was introduced, Cameron listed why it made sense from a business perspective but didn’t really list the benefits. And that to keep the same access you currently have, you have to pay (even though it really is a small amount). Luckily, Tyler was there to explain some benefits but really the model of “pay us to keep the same access or don’t and you will have less access than you currently have” didn’t sit well with me.
Example: the podcast already comes out fairly late compared to other shows. I know podcasts take a long time to edit, but when the show is recorded multiple days before release, their discussions on relevant topics are out of date and in lots of scenarios, no longer reflect the current situation (there are many instances over the last year when fast moving topics are covered on the show but are long out of date because the show was not recorded sooner to release date). While for some shows this may not be a big deal, Relevant tries to keep up with current events and main headlines. They are always behind/situations change so quickly now that having the podcast come out later means the discussion you hear may not be relevant any longer. I already felt that tension, but continued to listen. However, now, if you don’t pay, you will get the show even later than before, meaning the current events and thoughtful discussions will be even more behind and lack context.
I understand that switching to the relevant plus model makes sense, but it is hard to see it as a benefit as much as a “money grab” and trying to push listeners and subscribers to pay for something they have been used to getting for free for years.
If the model switches to where the subscription gives me more than what I originally had access to, instead of taking away access for the free version, I’d consider subscribing.”
