    In Episode 11 of The Sports Medicine Podcast, Dr. Dold sits down with shoulder specialist from The Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Tony Miniaci, MD. Dr. Miniaci is a world renown expect in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, including disorders of the shoulder. His orthopedic practice focuses on sports medicine and surgery of the shoulder and knee. His clinical research has focused on numerous topics related to shoulder instability. He has worked as an orthopedic consultant to the Toronto Blue Jays since 1995. He has also worked as a consultant to the National Hockey League Players Association and served as the Head Team Physician for the Cleveland Browns Football Club from 2003-2009. He has served on numerous committees including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine; American Shoulder and Elbow Society; Arthroscopy Association of North America; International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine; and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.

    In this episode, Drs. Dold and Miniaci discuss all of the topics related to shoulder instability. The discussion centers around the common clinical scenario of a young, contact-sport athlete presenting for the first time following a traumatic shoulder dislocation. Most relevant management considerations are discussed throughout the episode, including: diagnostic modalities (MRI vs. CT), non-operative management decisions, return to play criteria, indications for surgery vs. conservative care, arthroscopic stabilization techniques, the Latarjet procedure, and rehabilitation following surgery.

    In Episode 9 of The Sports Medicine Podcast, Dr. Dold sits down with orthopedic sports medicine and cartilage specialist, Dr. Eric Strauss, MD. Dr. Strauss is a sports medicine specialist with a clinical focus on ligament reconstruction, joint preservation procedures including cartilage repair, restoration and osteotomies, meniscus surgery, and the arthroscopic treatment of orthopedic pathology affecting the knee and shoulder. He practices at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital in New York City and is involved with NYU’s orthopedic residency program, taking on the role of program director in January 2020.

    As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Strauss is an active contributor to the orthopedic surgery and sports medicine literature, publishing more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters to help advance the field of sports medicine. His basic science and clinical research has focused extensively on the management of focal cartilage disorders around the knee, including cartilage repair and restoration, meniscus repair and transplantation, and the use of synovial fluid biomarkers to establish prognosis following intra-articular injury and prevent post-traumatic arthritis.

    The episode focuses primarily on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of focal cartilage lesions around the knee, including but not limited to the MACI procedure, osteochondral allografts, OATS procedure, osteotomies, and orthobiologics.

    In Episode 7, a panel of orthopedic sports medicine specialists meet to review and discuss recent sports medicine literature. The four articles reviewed have been featured in prominent sports medicine journals in early 2019. The episode features Drs. Sheena Black MD, Michael Khair MD, and Brett Raynor MD, along with host Dr. Andrew Dold MD. The goal of Journal Club is review and perform a critical appraisal of recent literature in the sports medicine world with a focus on novel modalities and unique studies that may be changing the way we think about our current practices.

    Episode 6 - Concussions in Sport (Part 2)

    In Episode 6, Part 2 in our series on Concussions in Sport, Dr. Dold discusses the management of concussions with Dr. Erin Reynolds and Dr. Kayla Covert, two experts in the field of concussions. In this episode, we focus primarily on the management of concussions and how our management has changed and continues to evolve. We look into the return to play (RTP) protocols and some of the specific management tools that we use to treat an athlete who has suffered a recent concussion, including vestibular physical therapy.

    Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries usually resulting from direct impact to the head or whiplash injuries during play. Sports concussion has become a significant problem in all levels of sport. In recent years, it has made headlines with reports about the consequences of returning to play too soon, as well as research findings into the long-term effects of the injury.

    Erin Reynolds, PsyD is a Clinical Sports Neuropsychologist who specializes in treating sports-related concussions. She currently serves as the Clinical Director of the Baylor Scott & White Sports Concussion Program at The Star in Frisco, Texas. She also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. Prior to these positions, Erin served as Fellowship Director for the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program and held an appointment as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. The UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program is the largest clinical and research concussion program in the world and during her 5 year tenure she developed advanced skills and a unique understanding of this complex injury.     Kayla Covert, PT DPT NCS is a board-certified clinical specialist in neurologic physical therapy with advanced training in the treatment of sports-related concussions. As a member of the Sports Concussion Program at The Star, she provides comprehensive assessments and rehabilitation for vestibular and balance dysfunction following concussion. Kayla also plays a role in reintroducing physical activity through exertion physical therapy. Dr. Dold definitely knows which guests to have on the podcast, he also knows them in and out before the interview. The guests are great specialist in different ways in sports medicine.
