Charming, Light-Hearted Yet Informative
These concise episodes are like the world’s best footnotes. Scholarly and well-informed, yet unpretentious and accessible, they shed welcome light on the material aspects of Jane Austen’s world. (Things she no doubt never thought would need explaining because she had no idea that people in a very different world of 200 years in the future would still delight in her books.) More than that, they explain how and why Austen used each item, place, or custom, to deepen characterization or advance the plot — so they help deepen our appreciation of her literary skill. The early episodes are a bit chatty for my taste. But I suppose that’s how we know they’re the work of real live people and not AI-narrated encyclopedia articles.

More reviews of The Thing About Austen
I am writing a play adaptation of Persuasion, so getting more details about life at that time has given me more confidence to flesh out the world I am creating based off of Austen’s characters and works. I appreciate you and your wonderful guests!

It’s so much fun to finally get answers to questions I’ve had for more than 35 years (flannel waistcoat?) - and getting to discuss the episodes with my daughter is just the best!...Read full review »
