Condescending and Enabling
I used to really like this podcast. The host is ethical and empathetic, which is hard to come by in true crime. However, it’s impossible to listen to anymore. The host lectures listeners in almost every episode insisting that every life has worth. Well of course, Marissa. But it’s like she’s lecturing us to virtue signal that she’s a superior human being because she cares about missing people nobody else cares about. And quite frankly, this show has devolved into trauma porn. The level of detail she goes into to illustrate the traumatic histories of the missing people - it’s unnecessary and serves only to make excuses for the horrifyingly dangerous life choices of the missing people. She allows family members to go on and on and on without editing or any investigation whatsoever. Marissa, guilty family members tell alternative versions of the truth. Marissa, not every family member of a missing person is a good person. They lie to make themselves look better. None of this is helpful. Making excuses enables people to continue being victims and hurting people around them. Almost every episode is about an addicted person who goes missing under chaotic, unintelligible circumstances. The most recent episode is about a woman who abandoned her 3 small children so she could continue using drugs and staying with random men. What about these poor babies? It’s hard to respect these people and then we have to be lectured by the host and shamed if we dare have negative views of their behaviors. A few episodes back she was throwing shade at “mainstream” crime shows that only focus on “the perfect victim”. Please stop. As an example, Dateline gives family members plenty of airtime, but with tight editing that tells a story in a far more fair light than any episode of The Vanished. Just because they choose stories of people who in general are not addicted to drugs- are these people less worthy because maybe they had less trauma in their lives? It’s not the trauma Olympics for goodness sakes. Check out some of the CBC podcasts that are highly ethical, investigative and enlightening with editing and no lectures also highlighting stories of non-mainstream people.
