Cassie discovered her passion for the maritime industry at a young age through a youth development program on a Tall ship. Despite being one of the few females in her maritime school class, she pursued her dreams and obtained a Diploma in nautical science with an OOW Unlimited certification.
Throughout her career, she faced challenges and barriers as a female in a male-dominated industry. From being the only woman in her deck and engine departments on multiple ships to navigating mental health boundaries, she persevered with resilience and determination.
Her upbringing on a farm instilled invaluable hands-on skills and a strong work ethic that prepared her for the demanding maritime environment. Despite early challenges and limited opportunities for female seafarers, Cassie is proud to witness positive changes in the industry, with more women aspiring to join.

Ayse Asli Basak is a seasoned maritime entrepreneur and innovator, having founded maritime start-up Shipsider to streamline commercial operations with smart, modular AI systems, optimizing efficiency and sustainability. With over 6 years of experience as a cargo ship Captain, navigating oceans worldwide, she brings unique insights into maritime technical and commercial operations. Ayse has held roles as Port Captain, Shipping Operations Manager, Safety Superintendent, and a certified Marine Inspector. Recognized for her leadership, Ayse is actively involved in various maritime associations and is passionate about empowering women in the industry. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Maritime Transport Engineering and a Master’s degree in International Trade & Logistics Management, with expertise in strategic management and innovation. Ayse's vision extends beyond entrepreneurship; she champions digitalization in maritime operations and is known for her innovative social projects, including the award-winning "SeaCode" app to combat harassment at sea. Ayse's achievements have been celebrated globally, including being named a Top 100 Female Founder in Ocean & Energy and recognized in the 40 Under 40 Professionals List at the Belgium Maritime Breakbulk Event.

On today's podcast, we have the UK Women Offshore Ambassador Heather Ennesss on the show. Heather shares with Christine about her journey working offshore and her journey at home while raising kids. 

Heather is also a proud member of the UK Careers at Sea Ambassadors program. She's on a mission to ignite young minds about the endless opportunities within the merchant navy. From visiting schools to sharing insights about non-combat roles, Heather's passion for expanding horizons knows no bounds. Heather is a member of the maritime community, an experienced seafarer, and a mom of four. She graduated from the University of Plymouth with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Studies (Merchant Shipping) and has worked on various vessels.

For 14 years, Heather has thrived as a Deck Officer and holds an Unlimited Dynamic Positioning ticket and her Masters Unlimited. She brings years of experience within the Oil and Gas sector as well as the Ferry sector. When she's not offshore or on maternity leave, Heather frequently tutors for the Whitehorse Maritime Academy, and she can often be found in schools at careers fairs promoting the industry in her spare time. Before maternity leave, Heather was the project manager for the Re-launch of the Careers at Sea Ambassador Program.

Christine has Dr. Sal Mercogliano on the podcast today. Sal is Chair of the Department of History, Criminal Justice, and Political Science at Campbell University. Moreover, the frequency of attacks has escalated, leading insurance companies to refrain from insuring ships navigating through the region.
