“Got into horror podcasts over the last six months, and IMHO the most excellent This Is Horror is the best of the lot.
Brian Keene’s The Horror Show and Three Guys with Beards are all pods, don’t get me wrong, but I’m a reformed journalist so I’m all about the interview, and TIH is 100% grade A interview beef: interesting writers (they’ve turned me in to a half-dozen new-ish horror writers), pieces that are usually 2+ hours long, great active listening, and very well-researched questions.
Also, they probably support the Oxford comma. Or at least Michael certainly does.
I’m focusing on horror after a time away, and really treasure good sources of information about writers. This Is Horror is aimed at the creative spirit so it’s all about writing, which means it’s all about life and how it informs and sometimes interferes with the creative sorority. Michael and Bob do a wonderful job with diving in deep with their interview subjects, even if they haven’t picked up my idea for Thesaurus Wars yet ;)
FYI, while you do get ancillary information about the business of writing/publishing and the modern horror landscape at large, those topics tend to be more forefront in the podcasts by Brian Keene and the Three Beards.
FYI, I recently joined TIH’s Patreon brigade (for a paltry $5/month), and am quite pleased with it. Their Unboxed series is like being in a lit class or film crit class, with two knowledgeable gents (and sometimes guests) deconstructing things (sometimes line by line) in a smart way. Their almost 3-hour ep on Jack Ketchum’s “The Box” was God’s work, as Michael would say :D
In closing, want to thanks Michael and Bob for putting in the time, energy, and love that has made this podcast so great. I’ve been there, and know all the invisible hours and days and weeks you need for this kind of quality work. Danke schoen, boys!”
