Disappointed by Season 2
Season 1 was a spoof of the true crime genre in general, which is part of what made it work. Covering a kind of ridiculous case, and focusing on the colorful characters involved, allowed the humor to shine through and the twist ending to be a genuine surprise. Season 2 focuses more on spoofing individual true crime tropes (taking every opportunity to say that “the system failed these people,” calling attention to the speech idiosyncrasies of witnesses) and as a result it isn’t nearly as funny. I’m a true crime aficionado, so the running joke of tEh sYStEm fAiLEd usually made me crack a grin, but it didn’t make me struggle to hide a giggle at work the way season 1 did. The twist ending felt more like an anticlimax than a clever twist, even though it made sense. I think it comes down to this: Would this podcast still be funny and entertaining to someone who wasn’t familiar with the tropes and cliches of the true crime genre? For the first season, the answer is yes. For the second, the answer is no. If they do a third season, I hope they’ll revisit what made the first season work so well overall. This is a fun podcast, but I do think there’s a bit of a sophomore slump.

It’s only episode 3 & I am hooked. It’s beyond fascinating, twisted, exciting & well done. I can’t wait to hear the entire story. Bravo!
