Advertisement for a mattress is a huge misstep
VOX should have realized that hearing an advertisement for a mattress could be an almost-fatal blow to many listeners' interest in listening to a review of the news. I don't care how wonderful the mattress company or their product might be. Advertising as an interruption to content is one of the most serious systemic evils, ushering in some of the very worst social consequences, at the root of our country's decades-long decay. An advertising-based media system,, combined with the remains of Jim Crow still haunting our land, plus unchecked militarism, and a financial and banking sector dedicated to further enriching the rich, has made deep political change impossible in this country for half a century. It's an excellent podcast, well-produced, the on-air team is great, and the content if insightful. It just isn't what I wanted it to be. These are great, short but in-depth episodes — always interesting, always providing more info behind the headlines. The title “Today Explained” makes it sound like the topics will be related to the news of the day (like NYT The Daily) and this isn’t that. But it is 5 episodes a week of awesomeness.
