“The keys to success of Vox’s podcasts like The Weeds and The Ezra Klein Show are insights and essential facts that aren’t reported anywhere else. So far, Today Explained lacks these keys to success — not just because of the choice of topics (enough sports/entertainment news, more policy news please!) but mainly because the guests are running most of the commentary. Guests on interview shows are generally hit or miss. Unless the guest is intrinsically interesting (very rare), you need a hands-on host constantly conversing and asking pressing questions to drive the discussion and keep it insightful and fresh (as Ezra Klein does very well on his long-form interview show). Unfortunately, most guests on interview shows are pretty banal when left to their own devices, and the second and third episodes of Today Explained suffered as a result. It made these shows disappointingly unremarkable. An alternative to more proactive interviewing is to dispense with guests altogether and have the show rely on the commentary of a talented host (or hosts), which is why the Weeds works so well. I’m hoping Today Explained can retool to give us Weeds-level commentary and analysis — only daily.”
