Good gaming podcast is suddenly taken over by Bloomberg Propaganda
For those of you who read the title and had no idea what I was referring to or rolled your eyes, I’d encourage you to bear with me as this is indicative of a major problem that is born out in other reviews, though I’d argue this is the most damaging example of the problem. First off, the gaming part of this podcast is phenomenal. But as it’s a podcast, the hosts spend some time talking about their personal opinions and experiences that have nothing to do with gaming. These are kind of fun but at times reveal some odd things and the one in the most recent show (Jan 27th) was rather disturbing to me. This comment will live on past this event but right now there is a complex situation going on in the stock market where retail investors (i.e. normal people) are pitting themselves against hedgefunds. If this doesn’t seem related to video games to you, then you’re right. The stock that is the weapon of choice in this fight is Gamestop (or GME) but it’s not really an important part of this story. Jason is one of the hosts and writes for Bloomberg, a publisher that has helped propagate some pretty egregious lies to some hedge fund’s benefit. This propaganda made a sudden appearance on this podcast both from Jason and Maddy. It was full of outright falsehoods which wouldn’t bother me normally, they’re a video game podcast for goodness sake! But the outright falsehoods were their saying that this would hurt game stop employees and that the money made by retail investors was hurting other normal people. Both of these are not true at all. They were also said with the unearned confidence with which Jason seems to be full of. It was the final straw for me. I’m shocked to write this, I don’t think of myself as someone who gets upset to hear a different opinion, but I don’t believe that that is what is happening here. Jason cites some Bloomberg articles that he read and is sort of pretending to be an expert but saying absolute falsehoods. This isn’t a different side to this story, this is the view that the hedge funds are pushing right now backed up by falsehoods. There are certainly some concerns with what is going on, but hearing about them inaccurately from such a great video game podcast was really disappointing and speaks to the general tone of false expertise that Jason seems to have. I’d encourage you to read some of the other reviews which discuss other issues with Jason. Maybe try listening but skip the end bits. But for now, I’ll be unsubscribing. There has been a lot of nonsense over the past few years and hearing fake news here of all places was just too much for me.
