Undisciplined, even sloppy
I so loathe Trump that I’m willing to put up with a lot while seeking new information. I give Heffernan credit for being fairly early in interviewing the authors of The Unmaking of the Presidency, and she’s showed similar good news sense on other occasions. But it is a measure of my absorption in this topic that I manage to tolerate her hysteria. It’s possible to point out the depravity of Trump and his enablers without screeching. It’s possible to interview people one agrees with without being worshipful. Heffernan frequently fails in these things. Two especially egregious examples were her recent interview of Just Security’s Kate Brannon regarding a scoop on OMB-DOD emails and the Jan. 29 show on Dershowitz and Starr. In the Just Security interview, Heffernan took time to congratulate herself and her interview subject on their gender. She pointed out that the DOD comptroller who was questioning OMB directives is a woman and marveled at the fortuitous fact that some a few brave women have spoken up. Sure, they’re brave. That’s not a function of their gender. If you’re going to claim that, you’ll have to explain how come a supposedly less noble person like Vindmann found the courage to speak up, too. Being male, he doesn’t fit the stereotype. Or how do you account for people like Murkowski? Being a woman, shouldn’t she have had the courage to call witnesses, or at least state a clearer position? Please. This is so stupid and counterproductive. On to the Dershowitz/Starr character assassination. I really don’t care whether they’re exemplary people. I want to hear an informed critique of their arguments. There is plenty to criticize without referring to Dershowitz as an accused child rapist. To be absolutely clear: I think the arguments he’s advanced for acquittal are terrifying. The fact that he seems to have an unsavory past is not attractive, but it also is not the point. Talk about the legal arguments and their implications. Heffernan's self-indulgence is appalling. It leaves me wondering: there are all these good podcasts out there. There’s Trump, Inc. There’s Lawfare. There are the VOX podcasts. There are the Brookings podcasts. There’s Rubicon. Doesn’t Heffernan listen to what other people are doing? Doesn’t she understand how important the subject she takes on are? How can she be so sloppy?Read full review »

Calling someone a rascist should be a pretty high threshold. However not in this podcast. They make massive leaps (i.e. anyone who thinks affirmitive action is bad is an unconscious racist and will vote for donald trump). Until somoene starts treating him fairly his strength only grows. If only...Read full review »
