Appropriately Titled
"Up & In" works on a few levels as a title for this conversational podcast that allows listeners to eavesdrop on interaction between two baseball-scouting-geeks. "Up" works in the sense that the podcast maintains the standards established by Baseball Prospectus, refusing to appeal to the lower denominator of the masses (like a production from the "worldwide leader"). It's not inaccessible, but the podcast isn't the least bit concerned with accessibility. To some, the discussion between Kevin and The Professor, especially when centered on specific player scouting reports, may sound like a couple "furbies" chirping at each other. But it's a testament to these two that many listeners (like myself) will be motivated to elevate their baseball knowledge in order to participate in the conversation. "In" works in the sense that Kevin and Jason, in addition to their own baseball acumen, bring a network of baseball insiders as guests to spotlight areas of the sport that too frequently draw little notice. In just the past few episodes, I've learned more about the Caribbean Baseball Series (like its existence, for one) and the nuts and bolts of player arbitration, than I would have picked up anywhere else. However, lest anyone fear the conversation an endless exercise in number-crunching, resembling a statistical circle-jerk, please know the hosts keep the spirit of the show fun, self-deprecating, and interactive with the listeners. They touch on subjects outside of baseball, like music, drink, and refrigeration, but always with the eye of the skeptical baseball scout (you will know what type of make-up a refrigerator needs to rate 80). Listen to the most current episode, and then go back and listen from the beginning to achieve your "Point-Niner" status.

The "Ian from Chicago" review of November 8, 2010 really hit the nail on the head. "The sections of show where baseball is discussed is very enjoyable. The sections where the hosts don't display any expertise (all other topics discussed) are not." I have tried valiantly to listen to these...Read full review »

Informative and really funny. Kevin and the Professor bring in great guests every week and are both easy to listen to. It is the rare 80 podcast.
