Yeri Kambari, 40, disappeared in 2014 after he was arrested by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Nigeria’s wartorn northeastern region. He had not joined the terror group, Boko Haram. There’s nothing indicating he had harmed anyone. He had simply gone to farm and had been a victim of circumstances. And so, Alhaji Modu, 40, decided to travel down to Lagos, in southern Nigeria, with hopes of tapping the higher demand for farm produce. He left behind a wife, daughter, and several loved ones. In 2021, the Borno state government announced that it would close down all camps for displaced persons in Maiduguri and begin resettling occupants back to their hometowns or other towns. This was to reduce the number of IDPs in the capital city and build resilience among the people who have had to rely on aid materials for years.

In a way, Amsa blames herself for what has happened. Back in Cameroon when they were refugees, her son, Lawan, wanted to remain in the country and work for his boss. But his elder brother, Musa, had died there after a brief illness and Amsa saw it as a bad omen. So, she insisted everyone return to Nigeria.
