For years I’ve wanted to read Dante’s COMEDY, but even the thought of doing so was daunting. Thank you Mark for making it come alive to the point of making one yearn for more!

Each episode could be 50% shorter if the repetition, giggles and padding were removed

As with many, my knowledge of Dante and the Comedy really only stemmed from a college humanities survey course, and not much more. But the recent PBS Ric Burns documentary on the life and works of Dante has put me on your doorstep, and I must say, I’m mesmerized! So, with the Comedy in...Read full review »

Wish I found it sooner! I’m recovering from a bad injury, trying to get back on my feet, and walking is now physically difficult….and that’s how I discovered this podcast! I was looking for a walking podcast, something to cheer me on my recovery journey. With its 20-minute or so episodes, I can...Read full review »

Massive appreciation for this knowledgeable and incredibly detailed walk through this intricate work. An invaluable guide for those embarking on one of the great works of Western literature and want to stop at all the sights along the way.

Dante…con brio! Thanks for illuminating my shallow and puzzled reading of The Divine Comedy. So helpful and enjoyable!

I read The Comedy last year and going in for a reread this month. Can I tell you how excited I was to learn about your podcast? Your enthusiasm, the sound effects, & attention to the little Dante details makes this reread extra special. Thank you for such an amazing podcast!

Fantastic podcast! Read The Comedy a few years ago, coming back to it now via James Joyce. This podcast has been so helpful in getting to grips with the subtleties of Dante’s text. Hanging in with Dante and Mark! This poem is so modern. It’s hard to fully grasp just how much of what Dante was...Read full review »

A great podcast - The presenter’s enthusiasm for the poem is infectious and his knowledge wide. I love the way that he doesn’t try to ‘solve’ all the mysteries of the poem, but instead names them And gives us different ways to think about what’s going on. A pleasure!

Mark Scarbrough knows this text so thoroughly that he can get behind surface appearances and plumb the deeper truths. I like his thesis that for all its talk of damnation and penitence, Comedy is mostly a story about love triumphant. Also, it’s fun to see Dante dish on the characters of his day.

Making the text accessible to the casual reader. Mark is passionate and knowledgeable and I’m really enjoying the podcast!

I never thought I’d get to The Comedy. Now I can’t believe it’s taken so long. But I couldn’t have done it without my Virgil, Mark.

I’ve been looking for a teacher for this piece and as I start episode 8 I have definitely found him! Update on episode 66 - how does a “modern” read a work like this without a good guide? Thank you for opening this up to a modern layman like me!

Too bad for me! I discovered this podcast at the end of its first season, binged it , and now I have to wait like everybody else for the next episode to drop. Luckily, I often listen twice and I have other translations to read and to listen to in between. I’ve read Dante before but have never...Read full review »

Can’t wait for the next 68 episodes! Condolences on your father’s passing. Hope you get back to CT soon so we all can continue our walk. Almost thru Inferno, that didn’t take long!

A treasure trove of a resource for anyone wanting to understand Dante’s Divine Comedy and why it’s stood the test of time. Mark’s enthusiasm is what keeps me coming back! It’s been surprisingly fun and I’ve learned a lot. (almost finished Inferno, definitely continuing with Purgatorio!) The amount each line of the poem is contemplated makes this a fascinating podcast. I’ve found myself doing things I never expected doing, like checking one translation against another. Thank you Mark for sharing your slow walk!

This is the first podcast that has induced me to write a review. I was idly auditioning Divine Comedy podcasts one afternoon and this one leapt out from a rather joyless pack. Joyless this show is not. Informed, idiosyncratic, endlessly companionable, Scarbrough does for Dante what Delaney did...Read full review »

I read Inferno and Purgatorio during the shut-down, but the busyness of back-to-normal life put a damper on my time with Dante. Mark’s slow and steady approach to the text in short, commute-length podcasts has allowed me to sneak Dante into the cracks of my schedule without sacrificing depth....Read full review »

This is a great podcast. I have been nerding out through the first 30 episodes and can't wait to catch up to the podcast by the end of inferno. Im reading Dante for the first time and this podcast has made all the difference! I enjoy the slow pace because it helps me to really understand this work and Marks love for this book is infectious. Oh, and his fun ghost voice for Virgil doesn’t hurt either lol. :)

I can’t express how much I love this podcast and my gratitude to Mark for creating it. My interest in The Comedy was sparked this year and I read it (in translation) with the help of commentaries. Love slow walking through Dante’s Divine Comedy with Mark. I feel as if I am the pilgrim and he is my Virgil, only Mark is a way better guide than Virgil!! Such a treat.

But for the overly dramatic voices in the first reading of the text. At best, they’re distracting; at worst, they’re chalk on a blackboard. Don’t spoil an otherwise wonderful podcast!

This is my first encounter with Inferno, so I was searching for a way to get as much out of it as I could without a full-on college course. SO glad I came across this podcast!
