“Mark Scarbrough knows this text so thoroughly that he can get behind surface appearances and plumb the deeper truths. I like his thesis that for all its talk of damnation and penitence, Comedy is mostly a story about love triumphant. Also, it’s fun to see Dante dish on the characters of his day.”
