“Thank you for the most engaging and deeply thought out literary podcast! I started reading Dante as part of my research into Samuel Beckett, who dearly loved Dante and used / stole from / referenced him in so many wonderful ways in his own work. “Walking with Dante” has given me so much more depth of engagement and understanding of the work, even alongside other reading guides (the excellent Reading Dante, by Prue Shaw).
I’ve deeply appreciated the asides about intentionality and interpretation, the rich work with Dante’s syntheses (and lack thereof) of classical and medieval thought and narrative, all the little problematics of character, substantiality, and the divided journey of pilgrim and poet, and the observations of the emerging richness of Dante’s capacity to indulge/trust in story and image over plain didacticism.
Thank you, Mark Scarbrough!! You are a fantastic meta-Virgil for the journey. Your voice is full of joy and wonder, and your affection for Dante and for serious exploration is infectious and admirable. (I may or may not have begun adopting your lovable stoccato “Hmm”s into my own speech patterns.)
