Watermanagement in urban areas 24: Planning (2) + Urban water innovations to reduce vulnerability of urban areas

Watermanagement in urban areas 24: Planning (2) + Urban water innovations to reduce vulnerability of urban areas

CT5510. Master course on design and planning of the urban water management system. It deals with fluxes and processes in water and soil. Furthermore, aspects of water management policy development are discussed.

Lecture on the planning aspects of civil engineering design of the urban water management system. It starts with the importance of understanding the planning process and shows several templates how this can be organized. In addition it elaborates on policy development which proves to be very important to achieve innovations in urban water management. It concludes with the interaction of water and spatial planning.

Lecture of the PhD research of Rutger de Graaf on urban water innovation to reduce vulnerability of urban areas. Showing his findings on both technical concepts as well as the transition management needed to get them implemented on large scale (mainstreaming).

Watermanagement in urban areas 22: Design SUDS

CT5510. Master course on design and planning of the urban water management system. It deals with fluxes and processes in water and soil. Furthermore, aspects of water management policy development are discussed.

Lecture on an innovative approach on urban drainage systems. After developing a basic approach to design a traditional urban drainage system, it can be taken one step further. The current system has some drawbacks which could be improved. Surplus of runoff discharge (sewer overflow) and lack of local infiltration (limited groundwater recharge) are examples which could be avoided with a wide scale of techniques often called best management practices (BMP), low impact development (LID) or sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS).

Watermanagement in urban areas 21: Design: Computation methods

CT5510. Master course on design and planning of the urban water management system. It deals with fluxes and processes in water and soil. Furthermore, aspects of water management policy development are discussed.

Lecture on rainfall-runoff relations. Because it is impossible to handle all processes which influence the runoff of precipitation, simplified models are used in design and operation of urban water management systems. These models use different computation methods to convert precipitation into net precipitation (loss models) and net precipitation into design runoff (transformation models).

Watermanagement in urban areas 20: Design soil (3)

CT5510. Master course on design and planning of the urban water management system. It deals with fluxes and processes in water and soil. Furthermore, aspects of water management policy development are discussed.

Lecture on soil management: Manipulating the characteristics of the ground to support for instance the accessibility of an area. These characteristics are however largely dependent on the building site preparation or filling method. So various methods are discussed and it is explained how to select one. Because it becomes clear that several aspects of building site preparation are very much entangled with the water management aspects of the previous lectures, an elaboration on some steps of the water assignment is presented.
