“My dad was a soldier at Dunkirk. An interesting point about soldiers picked up from the beach that I have never heard anyone refer to was revealed by my lovely auntie Doris who died recently in her care home. She was telling me about my dad arriving back in Ramsgate IN HIS PANTS. When I asked him about it he said it was due to the fact that his battle dress trousers with tight ankles acted like giant water balloons and even with the help of people already in the boat he could not haul himself over the gunwale while wearing them. Obviously the designers never predicted the Dunkirk situation.”
