I wanted to love it, but…
Only discovered this one recently & really wanted to love it as I was becoming a bit bored with my other podcasts. James & even Al clearly know their subject in immense depth, but after having gone back to the beginning and listened to the first few episodes plus a few new ones, that’s my challenge with it. They know way more than me, but don’t stop and explain to the listener in enough detail. I was listening to the Arnhem/Glider episode today, but simply couldn’t follow it. I know of the battle & saw a Bridge to Far, but I’m just someone with a passing interest in the war, not an expert, so too many of the names or military units mentioned as though the listener should know who they are, just go over my head. I’ve given it some leeway & tried a few times, but unfortunately it just detracts from the experience too much for me. Of course there are other podcasts (& plenty of other resources) out there, so it may just be that this one isn’t for me; if it’s aimed at those who already have a detailed knowledge, fair enough, but if not, personally I think slowing down & explaining the history a little more rather than skipping through would make it more engaging.

Quintessentially British and utterly compelling, I could listen to them all day, preferably over a pint and...Read full review »

Love this. I have a casual interest in the subject so some of the detail is genuinely mind blowing, but the knowledge levels are impressive and allow a listener like me to not feel alienated by not having a Masters degree in 1940s political history.

Wonderful podcast. Serious subject but these guys are marvelously funny. My dad fought in the American First Army, Second Armored, and I have long been fascinated by WWII. Al and James are simply terrific.
