My Strange Addiction
My Review: Solid podcast for those wanting to understand Vedic/Yogic thought straight from the scripture. Also incredibly entertaining, as well as fascinating and informative. Set aside your preconceived notions of “God” and “religion” and go down the transcendental rabbit hole. My Story as Another Other: I saw Raghu on Joe Rogan a while ago and felt something reaching out through him that touched me. I can remember the road I was driving down and the color of the sky, that how much of an impression it made on me. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but I wanted something he had. I cracked open a Baghavad Gita to find out, read the first purport and assumed it was the headstands. There was no way transcendental ecstasy could be on the other side of such servile language. Well, not too long after, I got served. At 19 I went to India, not for God but for cheap vegetarian food and some serious culture shock. After three months of stuffing my face and sweating sunflower oil, traveling from South to North, I was depressed. What was I doing here? What’s the point? My most meaningful experiences were free and I didn’t know how to recreate them. 1. A kind gas station owner fed my friend and I and offered us a place to sleep while we were on the road. 2. I happened upon an apricot tree on a walk along a river. I left India, roaming around Europe, looking for God at the bottom of bottles and in old museums. None of this brought me joy even close to the apricot tree. Although I didn’t have several experiences that filled me. 1. A rainy night in a gravel field spent sleeping under a tarp in Turkey 2. A random night in Romania sleeping in my tent in the tall grass After 6 months of travel, my most beautiful experiences were all free and had almost nothing to do with the place I was but they reminded me of my dependence and connection to something higher. A stranger showed me kindness when I was hunger and anxious, nature provided me sweet fruit when I was sad, I was protected and unharmed sleeping in the city. After I came home I read Autobiography of a Yogi. Now I wanted to go back to India for the soul food! I wanted to meet one of these masters. In the middle of reading Yogananda’s book I was referred to someone in need of help around the house. Halfway through the first days work I discover that he was initiated by one of Yogananda’s students back in the 60’s! I new of synchronicities but I had never felt the Divine directly orchestrate something for my edification so obviously before. Kriya yoga felt strange to me. A little too impersonal. I came out of the spiritual rapids into a wide and slow moving river. Where to go from here, I did not know. Absorbed in material improvement I continued to listen to podcasts about bettering the self. That’s when I saw Raghu on Rich Roll! “Yes!” I thought, “I need this guys energy with Rich right now!” I listened to that podcast with rapt attention and felt more prepared for Raghu’s energy this time around. I picked up on Wisdom of the Sages that day and I’ve barely missed a day in 3 months. I listen to roughly four hours a day and I’ve gradually phased out other podcasts, only listening to them briefly to then be brought back to the Bagavatam with greater appreciation. I’m so grateful for Raghunath and Kaustubha and Mara and all of the guests you have on the show. I feel as if my soul is quenching a thirst I’ve long been ignoring. Thank you, I hope to meet you all one day and offer my thanks and gratitude in person.
