Like, awful.
I've never felt the need to review a podcast before, partially because my standards for the medium are so low. Poor audio, rambling observations, and self serving faux intellectualism are all to be expected and are part of the charm of the "Hey, I have an idea for a podcast" non-gatekeeper state of current podcasting culture. But this. Ugh. This trainwreck. This takes what could be a solid basis for a series and proceeds to sabotage it at every turn in every conceivable way. I have slogged my way through three episodes on diverse topics, hoping each time that perhaps I will discover that the problem is that the hosts are straying too far from their areas of expertise. Alas it would appear they may have no areas of expertise at all. The most recent episode I tried to force down was based on the premise that "You're Wrong About...the Godfather." Wrong...In some way. How are we wrong?Since it's never stated as any kind of thesis statement at the beginning, who knows? But we're wrong. At the end of the episode, Mike speaks for all of us when, without any sense of irony, he asks "So how are we wrong about the Godfather?" Hey, Mike. Perhaps ask that before pressing "record" next time. The entire episode is (swear to God) built upon the fact that neither of them liked the movie when they first saw it when they were...13 and 16. One of them at least decided to rewatch the Godfather films before recording, but the other one couldn't even be bothered to put forth that minimal effort. The extent of the rest of their prep appeared to extend not much further than cribbing the Godfather Wikipedia page. Oh, and Sarah read some of Puzo's book. So she could make fun of it. And thereby prove...something about the movie? "This old movie that people say is a classic isn't very good" might have some weight if an experienced critic of some kind paneled with them. But with them alone it just ends up as laughably stereotypical "Man, parents just done understand!" chit chat between two self absorbed hipster doofuses. Perhaps they can launch a sister podcast hosted by a couple of middle aged folks based on "What's with Kids and Music Today, Huh?!" I am also 90% sure that Sarah thinks Marlon Brando's character's first name is Don. Like he's not "a Don." No. I think she thinks his real name is Donald Corleone. But, like, the most grating part of, like, the podcast is that both hosts, like, use the filler "like" like all the time! And while there is an argument for some of that being acceptable when going for a casual conversational tone, just listen to how many times it's said during the pre-opening bit in the "Godfather" episode and tell me how you can't end up counting the "likes" in the rest of the broadcast. This podcast is built on the conceit that "My opinion is as valid and worthy of being heard as anyone else's...even if I'm profoundly ignorant on the topic and choose to put no effort towards learning more." But this least it's also inelegantly delivered. So I can only assume they will soon be doing some live shows. 2018 is so awful.Read full review »

Reflective and insightful with just the right amount of tangents and sidebars. One of my favorite podcasts.
