“This seems to be a love or hate proposition judging from the reviews here, which is understandable. I’ve followed the case for decades with varying degrees of interest and attention, and the depth and detail does appeal to me. However, I can see why it could be off putting to people with a more casual interest or newcomers to the case. Also, over the course of the episode, Richard Grinell is very over the top. He used to make an interesting contrast to Morf, but he’s become pompous and takes himself a bit too seriously. This is a Zodiac true crime podcast, not Shakespearean theatre. His every sentence is a grand pronouncement, often way out of proportion to any actual importance or relevance to the case. He really needs to dial down the King Richard III histrionics.
But it has to be said, this is one of the very best Zodiac podcasts. One can argue about them going down rabbit holes and blind alleys too often and reaching for connections that likely aren’t there. But, these guys do put in the time and effort chasing down clues, no matter how obscure and seemingly trivial. It’s that kind of dedication and attention to detail that can provide that unlikely but crucial clue that helps crack a cold case.
And even though I gave him some grief about being over the top, Grinell’s website “Zodiac Ciphers” is great.”
