“As an instructor of economics, I’m baffled by his musings that lean towards socialism and somehow bypass any reasoning on how wealth can be generated and minimal failure of thought about the basic fact of scarcity—as well as the track record of socialism. As a Christian, I’m often disgusted with the materialism of the capitalist system, but I see that as a moral failing rather than an economic failing, and he fails to distinguish between the two. Also, as a Christian, he absolutely nailed it when it comes time for the need for compassion towards others, but then he’ll go on a rant, for example, against Trump saying that the only reason someone could ever support him was for a good 401k. Trump’s moral failings are obvious but not necessarily salient and it’s my need for compassion that has led me to a non-interventionist policy. You probably care as much about my opinion on this, as I do to hear his about Trump or economic systems, in the midst of really good and valuable talk about the need for compassion and recognization of trauma both in our own lives and for those who have been less fortunate than ourselves and systematically oppressed. I think it’s a shame he has undermined such a good message otherwise.”
