“There are many interesting and unexpected stories in this series. I enjoyed all the episodes and highly recommend the series. Episode 3 is nicely complemented by a recently updated episode of the podcast series “You’re Wrong About” that elaborated on the arc of Tammy Faye Bakker’s life and the recent film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”.
While I recommend the series, I found myself disappointed at the end because I didn’t feel I understood “THE Culture Wars” any better. This was probably because I went into it incorrectly expecting that the series was about the larger processes of “Culture Wars” but it was really about interesting individuals who got caught up these wars in various ways. By focusing on individuals, it is more like talking about how wild animals are impacted by pollution rather than examining the processes that produce the pollution. Both perspectives are valuable of course.
Part of my disappointment may also be due to the lack of attention to cultural divides over environmental issues. If there are to be follow up episodes, I hope one might delve into that arena. But I understand the need for focus and the focus of the series was highly appropriate and engaging. Culture touches all aspects of our lives and it seems to me that culture wars have long been a major part of human experience, not just in the US and not just in the last few decades.
Thank you!”
