Todays case is titled "Sarah Payne and Crimes that have Changed the Law." Sarah Evelyn Isobel Payne (13 October 1991[3] – c. 1 July 2000), was the victim of a high-profile abduction and murder in West Sussex, England in July 2000. Her disappearance and the subsequent investigation into her murder became a prominent case in the United Kingdom, as did the campaign for changes to child protection legislation that resulted from the murder. There are two main ways that crimes have changed laws. One is through the law makers themselves seeing a need for change. The other is when the public speaks out over injustice so loudly that politicians and law makers must take notice. They no longer can ignore what might have been staring them in the face. As you can imagine, it’s the second one that is more prevalent, and even then it doesn’t happen as often as it should. Public opinion is a strong force. A thunderous noise from campaigners can enact change. When a mass of voices joins together, authorities must listen. The voices carry a weight that is exponentially greater than if it were just one. After all, politicians and some elected positions in law are supported by peoples votes, so a bit of people pleasing needs to happen. And what people want is justice. When it comes to laws, if there are no rules and no structure, it leads to no accountability.
