Perplexing
I can’t fathom how this project got the green light. It’s a bunch of white men using the n-word as often as possible. So many characters have similar gruff pompous voices it’s hard to tell who is talking even though they announce it during every scene. This is why more diversity is such an asset in audio drama. Plus the sexism is incredibly thick. Not just in the near absence of women, but in the way the plot of S1 revolves around the few women on mic and refers to all the women off mic. There are ways of handling historical fiction that are themselves less racist and sexist than this. And judging by the number of comments from people who were offended when the writers spoke against some today’s overt racists, part of the reason some people are listening is *for* the gross racism. That should worry the authors. Some of this has already been reworked, so I’m wondering how much worse it was in earlier versions. The sound design is nice enough, though.

I was sad to hear that this show was ending. But happy to learn it was coming back. I learned a lot about history and improved my vocabulary.

The two come together so well in this podcast! Don't skip the episodes that go behind the scenes, they are...Read full review »
