“Mr Carville thinks there is a real possibility that President Trump may actually drop out of the race. The reason he will not is the power he can exercise between Nov 3rd and January 20th 2021 if he loses. He can utilize the power of the pardon (even for himself) which may not be resolved for an extended period. He could also resign post election with agreement that Pence will pardon Trump ; family etc as ultimate quid pro quo. A President Pence pardon, as awful it would be politically will be upheld by Supreme Court. These options are why Trump, even facing a huge defeat, won’t quit the race. Perhaps this scenario is supported by Trump dropping out in exchange for post term resignation/pardon by Pence if R’s still lose the election”
