So my wife and I get an unprecedent night out while our son is staying with Grandma. We get together with friends we haven’t seen in a while and go to an outdoor music festival here in Durham. We’re chillin’ on the lawn, listening to some folk music when I make the CARDNAL SIN of referring to the other couple as “Childless”.
The wife sits up straight, gets that southern angry drawl and proclaims they are “Child-Free” not “Child-less”, as if their lives aren’t complete without having children. Me. . .being me, asked if “child-free” was supposed to infer my wife and I were somehow burdened by having a child?
Mrs. Child-Free wouldn’t give an inch, so I apologized and said next time I see a person living on the street, I’d only refer to them as “Home-Free”. I wouldn’t suggest they get “Job-Free” benefits from the government or maybe get employment at the fantastic shoe store known as “Pay-Free” shoes. Her entire premises was “ridicule-free”!
So now, I’m the “tact-free” person; “regard-free” how I view it.
