“This title is entirely meant to pander to JD, but it’s true.
I started listening to A Hero Story about one year ago. I had been going crazy during lockdown, and wanted to find a quality comic book podcast that could keep me updated each week. I had tried other comic podcasts, but they weren’t for me. They often went off the rails and were too wild and rambunctious for me to enjoy.
This show was started by Instagram’s @historyoftheflash (JD) and @comicbookhunter (Hunter), and provided a calm and relaxing atmosphere to enjoy. They discussed their thoughts on each week’s new releases, their theories for future films and stories based on news that had come out, and more. They even interviewed some comic book creators, providing an informative and entertaining conversation for listeners to enjoy.
Hunter and JD are the perfect hosts, who show their love of the subject matter and stay on topic. They are very knowledgeable, and even at one point, they discussed the origins of characters’ creations such as Batman and Captain America. It was exactly the kind of show I had been looking for.
Then, everything changed when an Australian atom bomb named Harper (@comicrebirth) and a Marvel expert named Tyler (@comicboii) joined the podcast. Since then, the common consensus you will hear to describe this podcast is “chaos,” pure, uncontrollable chaos. Now, the show has become the very thing I wasn’t looking for in a comic podcast, and yet, it is amazing and hilarious to listen to, something I get excited for every week.
The show has a simple sequence:
-Live Action (or Adaptation) News
-Comic Book News
-Comics of the Week Discussion
However, this sequence is now often interrupted with the wildest conversations such as how Hunter nearly burnt his house down, each member roasting each other constantly (insert Italian chef noises), Harper’s shenanigans, and more recurring bits, such as how @comicsavior loves Brian Michael Bendis’ run on Young Justice. They actually had so many crazy hijinks, they had to create a whole side show for them, called “Timmies Talk,” on YouTube, which is a great time as well.
I often wonder if JD and Hunter knew what they were getting themselves into when they added Harper as a full time co-host. They wound up not only adding him, but a string of character voices that are now ingrained in the show’s continuity. These characters include Stan Lee (also the Devil, apparently), Mark Ruffalo (if he sounded like a Jersey enforcer of some kind), Jason Statham (whose dad is a bulldog), and so many more.
Tyler is also a great recurring member, who often has some of the best insights to the show. However, having Harper and Tyler on the same show is like that volatile mix of chemicals that your science teacher warned you against making, but you did anyway, and now you have no idea what will happen next, but you know it will be explosive at the least.
Thus, Harper and Tyler’s craziness often spreads to JD and Hunter, who then join in on the madness.
So, if you want a show that will not only keep you up-to-date on comics, but also have you laughing for two hours straight, then this is the show for you! Be sure to check out their YouTube channel, which has great side shows such as “Timmies Talk,” Star Wars discussions, and a monthly book club conversation.
Also, check out “The Price A Hero Pays” on ComiXology, as it is a beautiful story worth reading!
And to the hosts of the show, I have the following quote for you:
“You guys are the real heroes!” -Homelander (read “The Boys” already! I’m waiting!)
Thank you!
