“I’ve tried listening to this podcast twice - once when I first finished the books, and recently again because I thought it deserved a second chance. But neither the podcast nor my impression of it have evolved. These guys are negative and convinced of the superiority of their own opinions. Rather than engaging with the audience or with the material in an interesting or insightful way, they complain endlessly about the show, and tell tangential stories, and say things that are, honestly, sort of sexist. In contrast to other aSoIaF podcasts, where there’s plenty of enjoyable hilarity around sex and sexuality, as well as considered discussions of the depictions of sexual violence in the series, these guys commented that a recent GoT scene in which a female character was harassed and threatened added “levity” and was “funny,” and showed that the show runners were improving how they dealt with issues of sexual violence. Dudes, only if you haven’t dealt with similar behavior for your entire life would you find threats of sexual violence “funny,” and only if you’re particularly obtuse would you see a scene in which a major character was harassed as anything other than condemning of the behavior that character is facing. Ugh. I stopped listening there and won’t be back.
My bigger complaint, however, is really about the poor quality of the critique. Engage with the material, engage with listeners, engage with your co-hosts, and view the podcast as a vehicle for a discussion rather than simply a way to assert your opinions as an overriding truth.”
