An Appreciation for John Haines' Poems-- From the Perspective of Chinese Tradition is the topic of this event. Summer Hu, who works at the UAA Confucius Institute, discusses John Haines' poems through a Chinese lens. (Note, the presentation that accomapnaies the audio podcast is also posted in iTunes.) Explored are the influences of Chinese poets in John Haines' early poems and the challenges in translating his poetry into Chinese. An Alaska Poet Laureate and recipient of numerous literary awards, John Haines (1924-2011) was deeply influenced by classical Chinese poetry and his experiences living on a homestead out side of Fairbanks, AK. During his lifetime, he published more than two dozen collections of poems and essays that include Winter News, The Stone Harp, Fables and Distances, The Star, The Snow, The Fire, and the poetry collection The Owl in the Mask of the Dreamer.
