Estimating the number of Languages spoken in the past is difficult. .Unlike extinct animals, dead languages seldom  leave fossils, most lack writing systems. Cautious estimates based on known rates of languages development suggest that more than 10,000 languages  once existed. As cultural diversity decreased , the number dropped.
