Not technical enough for niche coffee lovers
I think the audience for this podcast is “someone who has never drunk coffee before”, or who normally drinks instant at home or an occasional Starbucks out. For that audience, I think the topics covered are of interest and covered at a level they can engage with. To someone accustomed to watching a Scott Rao, Chris Baca or James Hoffmann you tube videos, this just doesn’t have enough bite or technical rigour. I’m “already bought in” to the idea of specialty coffee, I already buy Caffeine magazine, I already think about origin, process and how much money the farmer makes. This podcast didn’t take me any deeper or further, and the approach to some of the topics was just too fluffy and light weight. Example the tiramisu episode which compared to James Hoffmann’s coffee cake episode left me frustrated at the lack of rigour in the recipe or approach: one person used a Moka pot, another did filter, and also the presenter seemed to confuse specialty (about origin and process) with instant (the coffee brewing method). It is possible to have specialty instant coffee! I applaud the effort and intent, and if in season 2 you decided to pivot to something more in depth, I would continue to listen to this podcast.

The banter between Scot and Jools made it light-hearted and entertaining while also being educational and accessible even for non-coffee snobs. Also loved the interviewing of experts to ensure the credibility of...Read full review »
