“Thank you for bringing the story of the Piper Alpha to people’s attention. As a former oil field worker who worked in the North Sea I appreciate you bringing this story to life. I understand that you are trying to tell a story and being to life the heroics of people to the story but there are issues with the story. There are a number of problems with this dramatization of events. First having an American narrator and failing to use local voices is truly jarring to listen to. I understand that you have budget constraints but even so. Second the major pitch of this story lies in blaming workers for the tragedy. Anyone who has studied this incident and has worked in the oil industry knows that corporations are skilled at ensuring that blame ends on workers and not on the corporations whose greed often ends in these tragedies. There are a number of practices and other actions that meant this incident happened. The oil industry in the UK does have amuch better practices in place for safety than it did before the incident but as subsequent tragedies have shown (BP Deepwater Horizon etc) safety will always take a back seat to profit if people can convince themselves that the risks are worth the rewards. More worrying however is that despite the oil industry being global many other nations have not taken the lessons of this incident to heart and in particular lock out tag out systems which are ignored at one’s peril but yet many oil companies and legislations have conspired together and have made a bad habit of changing controls in order to prevent costly delays to their work. Overall average storytelling and the facts are mostly right but do consider reading the books that give far more detail on the tragedy.”
