Longtime listening
I am a quasi stay-at-home mom—I work two 13-hour shifts as a hospital weekend option registered nurse on Saturdays and Sundays, and am home with my three kids Mondays-Fridays. During the first year that all three of my kids were in school and I was at home alone until 2 in the afternoon, I felt a bit lonely and isolated. I was doing housework alone, walking my local arboretum and park alone, going to the grocery with no one sitting in the cart or begging for checkout candy bars, and going to the gym without dropping my kids off to child watch and talking with other moms. To counter this new sense of isolation I felt (pre covid), I bought a Jabra Bluetooth to start listening to NPR, podcasts, and audiobooks. Cozy mystery series have been a guilty pleasure for years, so after completing a binge audiobook reread/listen of (my absolute favorite) the Lucy Stone series, I did a random podcast search on said cozy mystery series, and happened upon this podcast, still in its early days at the time. As a former pop cult fanatic (no time for that nowadays with kids), and current reader (listener), comfort and ambiance seeker, and hygge and cozy aesthetics lover, I immediately connected to Matt and Gillian, in all areas beyond my initial search topic. Even though they are a decade and generation behind me, I found a pair of gentle kindred spirits, and a POV and lifestyle that reminded me of my younger self living in New York City in my twenties and early thirties in the early aughts working from my first degree in English journalism. I love that they appreciate the classics from my youth, but I look to their podcasts for new book, tv and movie recommendations and have found new favorites based on their recommendations—the kids and I all watched and loved Over the Garden Wall, I have discovered and read (listened to) all of the Mrs. Morris and Cajun Country mysteries, and I now will buy the overpriced Pumpkin Soufflé candle from Anthropologie every fall thanks to Gillian, and the classic Ralph Lauren Christmas candle every Christmas, thanks to Alonzo. (I am almost convinced I may also have to venture into BBW this fall to check out the White Pumpkin candle). This stage of life for me, in the thick of child-rearing (and now Covid), there is not much room for socialization beyond subjects revolving around parenting and children, and when I listen to ATC, whether week-by-week, or catching up with a binge-listen, I always feel like I am catching up with good friends. In this time of extreme flux in the world, I also like to visit the Facebook group where I find comfort and camaraderie among friends—from old familiar faces like Gretchen, Kate, Bill, Bryce et al—to likeminded newcomers who are also looking for refuge and a balm to soothe the often harsh reality of this current world.

Love this podcast! Just discovered it and already bingeing episodes. Also love that it’s ad- and sponsorship-free! Given the theme, this show could quickly devolve into a vehicle for just hawking (cozy) products. Instead, it’s the hosts’ earnest and honest and sometimes delightfully serendipitous...Read full review »

Loving this new cozy podcast so hard!! It's the perfect antidote to existential dread and the horror of living in a world that may implode at any minute. Special bonus: I'm a librarian who lives in the Baltimore area, so I love all of the bookish and Baltimore/D.C. shout-outs. Thanks so...Read full review »
