Happy Pride! This episode our we wanted to highlight the intersection of climate change and the LGBTQ+ community. Shelby and Anton discuss queer ecology, an inclusive birding movement, and how the climate crisis is affecting the LGBTQ+ health crisis.
Segment 1: Nature is gay sometimes. Anton shares an article that dives into species that display gender fluidity and homosexuality just like humans do! Anton discusses the presence of transgender and homosexual species throughout nature.
Segment 2: Shelby talks about LGBT: Let’s Go Birding Together. The Audubon Society’s inclusive birding program that provides an inclusive way for people to be together doing what they love, enjoying the great outdoors!
Segment 3: Climate change affects various communities differently. Anton explains how certain diseases are found at a higher rate in the LGBTQ+ community than in cisgender populations. He also spotlights Queer activist Leo Goldsmith, who organized the “Queer and Present Danger in the Context of Climate Change” event as co-chair of Environmental Justice at #Yale.
