An argument for anonymity
As a veterinarian I’m very vulnerable online as anyone can google my name and find my place of work, show up there or post on yelp, put my practice at risk, hassle my employees and clients etc. We get all kinds of death threats and harassment from all sorts of people. Animal rights activists, false allegations from clients, antivaxxers, trolls, political extremists, cancel culturists etc. We are mostly straight white women from agrarian backgrounds so tend to be from more conservative backgrounds, and go to work and live in more diverse areas as adults doing a lot of community work most of us don’t have the sociological and/or cultural backgrounds to keep ourselves politically correct. But at the same time we are doing the real work most people only talk about online. My colleagues and I all have anonymous accounts on social media for our own protection. Our friends and family know our aliases so that we can get the social benefits from Facebook but stay safe also.
