Revisiting the scars of 1998
I am the same age as Rog and grew up a suburban soccer player in the 80’s. I never amounted to much and when the teen years hit and my athletic skills were greatly surpassed by my peers, I redirected my energies to music. In 1994, I was a year out of college and that music career (naturally) never happened either. It was the 1994 World Cup that reignited my love of soccer and of sports in general. I followed the amazing run of our denim clad boys (still bearing a grudge against Leonardo for his foul against Tab Ramos), and haven’t looked back. Following the USMNT sometimes has felt like Roger’s depiction of being a Evertonian abroad, with dodgy single camera coverage of poor CONCACAF pitches acquired through suspect Internet feeds, but the struggle has only grown my love of this ragtag team. I was one of the ridiculous optimists in 1998, self-deluded about our team’s capabilities and chances. Weren’t we ranked #11 in the world going into this? Surely those rankings meant something, right?! Thank you, Rog, for recapturing this era and helping me through the current dark days for US soccer fans.

No one quite tells a story like Rog Bennett. Can’t get enough of this story and I’m only 2 episodes in

Roger Bennett delivers a beautiful mix of polished and gritty interviews and stories that allowed me to both learn about and relive the development of the USMNT that can still be witnessed today. Well done.
