“It is difficult for me to articulate why I believe this is the best podcast I have ever subscribed to. I don’t come to this as a Revolutionary War buff — totally the opposite, I’m just a guy who saw Hamilton and realized that I knew embarrassingly little about the revolution. So I found a podcast. Which is now one of my most treasured weekly activities.
Again, it is hard to explain why that’s the case. Sometimes I dig the story. Sometimes I nerd out on the accompanying blog posts, which always have the key primary source documents, maps, portraits, so forth. Sometimes I just marvel at the degree of preparation required for the host to pull this whole thing off.
Mostly, I just like the guy. He’s smart, thoughtful, candid, grossly over-educated on the topic, and his enthusiasm for the subject matter is apparent (and believe me, infectious) without ever feeling affected or cheesy. Just a steady, no-gimmicks presentation with just the right amount of personality showing through.
Stray thought — the podcast is very good at pulling back to do capsule episodes explaining the big picture or relevant topics. For example, exactly when you’re starting to wonder about the practical differences between British regulars and Continental militia, BAM there’s an entire episode on the topic. Exactly when you’re starting to wonder whether you’re currently in 1777 or 1778, the host pulls back and recaps the overall war and political postures at the time.
Anyway, love it all.”
