“My mom is a huge Selena fan - she was born in the 70s and was born in El Salvador. I was actually born in 1997, so while I did not get the chance to be alive during Selena’s time on this earth, I knew of her as soon as I could learn things. I absorbed every song, every video, and every performance. My mom remembers the day she heard the tragic news - she was coming home from work and heard on a nearby radio, and ran home distraught. It’s crazy to think that my immigrant mother, from Central America, would find inspiration and representation in this young Mexican-American woman from Texas. Born in Georgia, USA, I found a lot of relation to Selena - even being born after her passing. My Spanish ended up not being so great, but just like her, I knew it was never too late to reconnect with your roots. And despite that, her music is fresh and timeless - no wonder that she is shining brighter than ever before. Like many fans, I have always been fascinated by the life and times of this star taken away too soon. And as a podcast junkie, I scoured the internet for episodes over her life, hoping someone would even dedicate a whole podcast to her. Thank you Maria. Your story and the way you intertwine in with Selena is so beautiful and raw. I just finished the second episode, and I cried at your story of your father. Even before you bravely shared that with us, hearing Abraham the dad reflected my own father. It made me understand the dynamics of Latinx father-daughter relations in my own personal life. I am so excited to see where the podcast goes, and I cannot recommend this to others enough!!! Please please please listen and share! Sending love from Atlanta! 🤍”
