“I really love how Maria uses the seemingly shallow or outside appearances to delve deep into issues of classism, capitalism, immigration, internalized oppression.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how she talks about how Tejano music and how tejanos get put down. SELENA UNITED THE POCHOS AND THE MEXICAN NATIONALS or those who were proper Mexican-Americans. She made it ok to not speak Spanish perfectly and to love disco, and house, and freestyle, AND cumbias!
That was my upbringing. My dad listened to R&B, Rock, and a heavy dose of Motown and soul. My music tastes are very influenced by African American culture. I didn’t hear Mexican music unless it was my grampa playing records (or on one of the many instruments he played) or my abuela with the tv on. I’ve seen a lot of people on the pages I follow on FB put down Tejano music and Selena. I had a right to tell them that the East LA accent, well guess who were the originators? TEJANOS FROM EL PASO. AJUAAA! I do relate to the issues Maria’s brings up as well as how it reminded me why Selena was the first artist I started to listen to in Spanish in 1994 and how she helped this pocha to become fluent in Spanish. I was a little skeptical of the Abraham interview but it was done so well. She really presents a multi-faceted analysis of his controversial personality and then the layer of her own connection with dad. Wow.
Anyhow, really well done podcast. Recomendissimo.”
