A Voice of Clarity in the Wilderness
Most college football fans have never heard of Ralph Russo. After all, working for the Associated Press usually means toiling in obscurity for journalists. It might be your byline, but it’s never your paper. But when your organization controls something called the AP Poll, a vote that has anointed the sport’s champion for almost 100 years, well, it’s a whole new ballgame. Given the shadow the Poll casts, and the anonymity a podcast affords...Ralph and the AP could have turned this into just about anything. Fortunately for college football fans, the end product is amazingly good. Russo’s subtle wise-guy personality allows him to be agnostic and skeptical about the content. His schtick also seamlessly fits with the AP’s role of being reactive to the Poll, of helping the “big city” cut through the hype. It knows its niche and knows it well. That my friends, is what separates the good podcasts from the great ones. Any podcast that tries to be all things to all people is going to struggle. But from ones that can be some things to some people, the sky is the limit.
