The Notebook

Description
This week we review the 2004 American romantic drama film The Notebook directed by Nick Cassavetes, based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s. Their story is read from a notebook in the present day by an elderly man, telling the tale to a fellow nursing home resident. We are delighted to welcome back our special guest Tiff to the Aussie and the Scotsman studio. Despite a shaky start and a terrible movie explanation from the Aussie this is one of our longest podcasts to date. And that is very telling. We debate some serious questions on love and marriage. We know the Scotsman is not a fan of love stories. Do you think he loves this or hates it?  It's one of the two!  You don't need to ask what the Aussie thinks - he has butterflies and fairies and rainbows in his head. He is in love with this movie as is Tiff. The Aussie's brain is stuck on repeat:  "It's a beautiful love story,  It's a beautiful love story" and it clearly upsets the Scotsman. Can't he go deeper than that? "Do you have a soulmate? "Is there one person you are meant to be with for your entire life?" "Does a marriage need to be balanced at 50/50? "Can you be friends with someone of the opposite sex if you're married?" These are just some of the questions asked during this podcast. We discuss societal expectations of what marriage is - and what we think it should be. Let us know what you think.
