Shirish Kulkarni and Mattia Peretti explore the transformative potential of community-led design in this episode of the b° future podcast – your podcast for journalism and constructive dialogue, brought to you by the Bonn Institute.
When we at the Bonn Institute talk about constructive journalism, we’re talking about journalism that centers on people’s needs. And what better way to know what these are than by asking them directly? Or, going one step further, giving them control of the journalism design process?
The “News for All” project is an inspiring example of such community-led design. Shirish is one of the project’s innovators: he’s the News Innovation Research Fellow of Media Cymru and the Cardiff University Journalism School. In this b° future episode, he’ll explain why he talks about self-protection instead of news avoidance in relation to marginalized communities, and why journalists should think more like product designers. Shirish is joined by Mattia Peretti, a learning-experience designer and Knight Fellow with the International Center for Journalists.

The non-profit Bonn Institute addresses the media industry's growing need for networking and knowledge exchange on constructive and user-centered approaches to journalism. Through applied research, publications, events and training, the institute aims to further develop journalism by placing people’s interests at the heart of our work, which is especially important in light of societal challenges.
