Description
Five audio-makers from around the world take over The Essay to offer a series of Radio 3's innovative Between the Ears features in miniature. Each edition takes an image as its starting point - from a radio producer who finds herself caught in a news image to a painting come to life.
Creation of the Birds by Sami El-Enany is part tone poem and part narrative reimagining of Remedios Varo’s painting of the same name. El-Enany chose to focus on three main aspects for his Creation of the Birds, the Owl as the creator, their tool - the string instrument brush that hangs from their neck, and the very birds that are worked into existence. The piece is formed of three chapters. The Skylark, the Oystercatcher and the Blackbird. Each chapter follows the Owl’s creative process: a magical ritual that infuses music, painting and encouraging words that goad the birds into existence. El-Enany’s Creation of the Birds is about the private life of an artist, the origins of inspiration, and is an ode to the personalities of beautiful birds and the landscapes they inhabit.
