How Psychedelics Are Transforming Medicine
Listen now
Description
Beyond Psychedelics is a podcast that explores the therapeutic potential of psychedelics and neuromodulation. The FDA is conducting clinical trials to determine safe dosages for patients and ketamine and MDMA are being used to create a distorted sense of self, leading to a disassociation from the current state of mind to a different state of mind. However, at-home ketamine usage is not regulated or supervised, leading to adverse effects or bad trips. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, along with therapy, results in higher efficacy for patients.  Ketamine blocks NMDA receptors, involved in the transmission of pain signals and mood regulation, leading to an increase in the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain, glutamate, and a dreamlike state that alters the perception of time and space. The podcast emphasizes the importance of ongoing support for patients after treatment, as well as the need to treat the root cause of mental health issues, not just the symptoms. Mental health professionals need to incorporate other elements of mental health treatment, including counseling and EMDR, along with psychedelic treatments.
