“I love this show. I remember how excited I was to see Bo and Sheil join the athletic and read Bo’s story about Chip Kelly’s first game, and how much more excited I was when I saw they were doing a podcast. At first I was skeptical of ZBerm’s fit into such a whimsical, inside-joke-based podcast, but he’s become one of my favorite parts of the show. Marissa also has brought so much the to table that makes the show more entertaining.
The problem I have with the current iteration of the show is not that it’s too long—in fact I prefer it when my favorite pods go for over 90 minutes. It’s that Bo, who is hilarious, and an amazing host, needs someone like Sheil to bicker with him. Sheil is expert level at pushing back on Bo’s shenanigans, and the return fire doesn’t seem as biting. ZBerm unfortunately “takes the bait” from Bo and (fairly) gets defensive, and the pod just turns into two guys arguing because they’re not on the same page about what to take seriously about the topic at hand.
The reason this bums me out is not the arguing itself—the only other pod I listen to that has this quality of interpersonal banter is Around the NFL—it’s that Zach so badly wants to give the audience his analysis of the team, and Bo usually doesn’t want to seriously talk about the team. This hurts because I have a lot of respect for Bo’s analysis and when they do lock in and talk ball, it’s easily the strongest Eagles pod around. (Philly Special is very good, but Solak is a bit of mismatch with Sheil, IMO).
This a rambling way of saying that I love this pod and have no plans to stop watching and listening to it, but I’d enjoy it so much more if there was more of a focus on things other than for example:
-jokes comparing Zach to Tony Dungy because he ate Chick-fil-a
While I personally thought that was hilarious, the pay off of that joke was submerged for me by the way Zach didn’t appreciate the comparison. Either the jokes should just get zipped in, or they need to be taken less personally. Dealers choice I guess about whether Bo should tone the jokes down or Zach should take himself less seriously on the pod. But one or both of those changing is how I think the show improves.”
