“Initially, I thought I’d discovered a neat little podcast. She got as far as, “If you FEEL like an imposter, it’s because you ARE one.” This is the exact polar opposite of what anyone with a shred of psychological understanding says. Doulas are valuable, we are well trained, we have invested in ourselves since our first class towards certification, we are professional birth workers because we have been educated in the field. When I became a teacher, I never thought during my first year in the classroom “gee, I’m such a poser because I am a poser…” I felt confident and capable. I didn’t ask for less money than the teacher across the hall. But we’re supposed to think of birth work as any different? This woman and her “philosophy” are why doulas start out working for free, or for utterly low ball fees; they listen to their inner self-doubt, and then run into someone like this. Perhaps her other episodes aren’t anything like the one I just heard. Perhaps not. I won’t be sticking around to find out. There are countless podcasts that build us up, rather than tearing us down. She comes across as someone with a bloated sense of self-entitlement.”
